Will Think Stick Run on My Computer?
Think Stick is made for ordinary computers, not gaming rigs or lab machines.
Still, it is real local AI. That means your computer does the work. The USB stick holds the app, the AI files, your documents, and your conversations. Your computer supplies the memory and processing power.
The short answer: Think Stick needs a modern 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer, or a Mac, with at least 12 GB of RAM. 16 GB or more is recommended — that runs the strongest AI, gives the best answers, and feels the most comfortable.
Computers with 8 GB of RAM are not supported. We used to offer a smaller "Lite" AI for them, and we dropped it on purpose: it gave answers we were not proud of, and we would rather tell you plainly that your computer is not a good fit than sell you a disappointing experience.
The minimum requirement
The most important number is memory, also called RAM.
Minimum: 12 GB of RAM. Recommended: 16 GB or more. Below 12 GB, Think Stick will tell you the computer does not meet the requirement rather than run badly.
Why does RAM matter? Local AI has to load large model files into memory while it works. Cloud AI hides that from you because a data center is doing the work. Think Stick keeps the work on your own machine, so the limits are closer to home.
How to check how much RAM your computer has
It takes about ten seconds, and you do not need to install anything.
On Windows 10 or 11:
- Right-click the Start button and choose System.
- Look for "Installed RAM" under Device specifications — that is your number.
- (Or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click Performance, then Memory.)
On a Mac:
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Look for "Memory" — that is your number.
If it says 12 GB or more, you are good. If it says 16 GB or more, you will get the best Think Stick has.
Windows and Mac support
Think Stick works on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS.
On Windows, it is built for modern 64-bit computers. On Mac, you plug in the drive, open it, and start the app for your system.
The experience is meant to be simple: plug it in, open the drive, double-click Start, and use the chat in your browser. The browser is just the window. The AI itself runs locally from the Think Stick setup.
Do I need a graphics card?
No. Think Stick is designed for normal computers without a big graphics card.
A strong graphics card can help some local AI setups, but Think Stick does not require one. The main things to check are your operating system, RAM, and whether your machine is reasonably modern.
That said, there is no trick here. A faster computer will usually feel faster. An older computer will usually feel slower.
What happens on a 12 GB computer?
A 12 GB computer is the floor, and it runs a genuinely capable AI — the same one a 16 GB machine falls back to when it is busy. It answers well, reads your documents, understands photos, and handles voice.
Heavier tasks may feel slower than on a 16 GB machine. Voice mode, photo understanding, large PDFs, and long answers can use more memory and time.
If replies feel slow, ask for shorter answers or close other programs (web browsers use the most memory). Think Stick includes plain-language settings so you do not have to choose model names or technical options.
What happens on a 16 GB computer?
16 GB is the computer Think Stick was designed for. It runs the strongest AI on the stick, which answers noticeably better — especially from documents.
This is the right fit for anyone who plans to use voice, ask about photos, import documents, or keep longer conversations going. It also makes startup and responses feel smoother. If you are choosing between machines, choose the 16 GB one.
It still will not feel like a giant cloud AI service. GPT-class cloud models run on far more powerful hardware. Think Stick is local, private, and portable, but it is not trying to beat a data center at raw speed.
How fast is it?
Speed depends on your computer, the selected AI size, the length of your question, and the length of the answer.
Cloud AI often responds quickly because the work happens on large remote servers. Think Stick runs on your own computer. That is better for privacy and offline use, but it can be slower.
The first launch may take a few extra minutes while the stick prepares itself on your computer. After that, most computers are ready to chat much faster. If something feels heavy, choose shorter answers or a smaller AI.
Is the text quality the same as ChatGPT?
No. This is important to say plainly.

What about storage and USB ports?

The stick has both USB-A and USB-C connectors built in, so it plugs directly into older computers and brand-new ones — no adapter needed. Once connected, it appears like a drive, and the Start file launches the app.
Keep the stick plugged in while you are using it. Your conversations, files, and app data live on the drive.
